The Chicago Bears are parting with 27-year-old kicker Cody Parkey.
The move became almost inevitable after Parkey's blocked field goal against the Eagles eliminated his team from the playoffs in January. Sources informed on the situation first broke the news NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.
Parkey struggled throughout his one season with the Bears - converting just 23 of 30 field goals (76.7%) - and notably hit the upright four times in a Week 10 win over the Lions. The kicker signed a four year, $15-million deal in 2018, of which $3.5 million is guaranteed for 2019.
The Bears' decision might be what's best for Parkey, who will now hope to make his fifth team in as many years. The kicker came in for a lot of scrutiny following the Eagles loss, with his subsequent appearance on The Today Show catching general manager Ryan Pace "off-guard".
With Chicago now requiring a kicker, reports are speculating the return of long-time kicker Robbie Gould, who becomes a free agent following two years in San Francisco.
"Once a Bear always a Bear," Gould said, per the Associated Press. "I truly mean that. This is where I spent 11 years of my life playing for an awesome organization. I've developed a lot of great relationships throughout the city but also the organization, just like I've done in New York, just like I've done in San Francisco. Will it happen? I don't know."
