Broncos trade Case Keenum to Redskins

The Denver Broncos are sedning Case Keenum and a seventh round pick to Washington in return for a sixth round pick. Both picks are in 2020.

Keenum's contract was reworked in order to make the deal manageable for the cap-tight Redskins, who will pay Keenum $3.5 million. Denver will also pay Keenum $4 million, but creates $7 million in cap space.

The moves comes as a result of Joe Flacco's acquisition from Baltimore three weeks ago. Keenum will presumably fill in for the injured Alex Smith who is struggling with a gruesome knee injury suffered in November.

Keenum will face a battle with Colt McCoy for the team's starting position. Only one year removed from a lucrative contract with Denver, the 31-year-old will need to prove he deserves a job in the league before becoming a free agent again next year.

The Redskins will be Keenum's fourth team in as many years. The one-time journeyman looked set to find a place in the league following a remarkable 2017 season with the Vikings, but failed to impress in 2018 after signing a two year, $36 million deal with the Broncos last year.

Keenum threw for 3,890 yards, 18 TDs and 15 interceptions in Denver. His play was over-shadowed by the emergence of running back Phillip Lindsay and the team's ground game. He will hope a year with a team built to win now ccan restore his value.
