A week after being franchise tagged by the Kansas City Chiefs, linebacker Dee Ford is reportedly being sent to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2020 second round pick.
NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported the news.
Ford got a reworked trade with the deal, expected to be $87.5 million over five years. He was due to make $15.4 million under the franchise tag.
Ford's name was oft mentioned as a trade candidate as the Chiefs transition from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3. Keeping the 2018 breakout player seemed unlikely despite general manager Brett Veach saying the team wanted to Ford in February.
The 27-year-old recorded career highs in sacks (13) and tackles (55) last season and lead the league with seven forced fumbles. That was after playing just eight games in 2017 due to a back injury.
Ford joins recent free agent acquisition Kwon Alexander in San Francisco to form what could be a formidable defense. General manager John Lynch's side ranked 13th in defense last year last year -- and just got better.
