New Jets head coach Adam Gase and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams are already getting on each other's nerves.
ESPN's Rich Cimini reports that Gase "balked" at the idea of Williams making his son Blake a defensive assistant --a hiring the team announced yesterday (9 February). The older Williams "wasn't happy" with the reaction from Gase, whose father-in-law, Joe Vitt, was brought in as a senior defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach.
The tension comes as no surprise from a pairing most people would label as headstrong, but how soon and easily it came comes as a concern to Jets fans. Gase and Williams are two of the league's more fiery coaches, and much was made of their pairing together.
Williams has worked with son Blake eight of the nine years Blake has been in the league -- the last two being with the Browns.
The defensive coordinator also worked with Vitt in New Orleans. The two haven't worked together since Vitt testified against Williams amid a 2011 investigation into bonuses being paid by the Saints for injuring opposing players. Williams was suspended a year while Vitt was suspended six games.
The coaching selection should remain fascinating all season, especially with Williams changing the Jets' defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme.
