Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid may have settled their collusion case against the NFL for less than $10 million .
It was previously believed the former 49ers players had secured tens of millions of dollars from the league when they settled their grievances case last month. But The Wall Street Journal, who first reported the news, suggests the number is far lower than that and couldn't determine how much Kaepernick and Reid will actually receive after paying legal representatives.
The pair alleged franchise owners had conspired to keep them off the field after they began protesting racial inequality and social injustice issues.
A joint statement in February from lawyers representing the NFL, Reid and Kaepernick said the terms of the settlement were confidential:
“For the past several months, counsel for Mr Kaepernick and Mr Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL,” the statement read: “As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement so there will be no further comment by any party.”
While Reid recently resigned with the Carolina Panthers after playing their last year, Kaepernick has not played since 2016 -- when his protest during the national anthem began. He spent six seasons with San Francisco and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl championship.
