One of 2018's fiercest pass rushers looks like he's staying in Kansas City.
Speaking to local media, Chiefs GM Brett Veach talked about pass rusher Dee Ford, commenting: "Obviously Dee's a player that had done so much for us, in particular last year, that we're excited about bringing him back... When we drafted Dee [in 2014] - all those things we envisioned for him - he showed that he was that player."
An upcoming free agent, Ford would most likely want to test his market now. But Veach's comments make it clear the team is not ready to let that happen, making Ford a prime franchise tag candidate for the third best team in the league.
Ford is not against being tagged, previously stating: "If it happens, it happens." He added last month that "[Kansas City] is home to me. I love the community and I'm just used to that environment, so I'll be blessed to be able to stay."
Ford suffered a season-ending injury in 2017 before producing career highs in sacks (13) and tackles (55) in 2018. Due to his injury history, the franchise tag is a good way for the Chiefs to see whether 2018's numbers will be typical for Ford going forward -- especially with new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo changing to a 4-3 scheme.
The franchise tag could be worth $14.96 million to the former first round pick if initial estimates are correct. What such a talent would fetch on the open market is anyone's guess, but for now it looks like both sides are happy not to find out.
