Replacing Gronk tops Patriots' list of priorities

TAKEAWAYS

PROS

- Trading for defensive end Michael Bennett does a good job filling the hole left by Trey Flowers (who went to the Lion for big money in free agency). It should help take the focus off Deatrich Wise Jr. who will still need to step up during an important third year in the league.

- With Devin McCourty realising he was too young to retire, New England doesn't have to chase a starting cornerback for 2019. They may want to add some depth - cornerback Eric Rowe moved on this off-season - but the Patriots' strong defensive backs unit frees up some picks that can be spent elsewhere on the roster.

CONS

- Replacing tight end Rob Gronkowski should be the Patriots biggest priority in the draft. His versatility - even in a down year in 2018 - transformed the Patriots offense. Finding an All-Pro talent might not be necessary, but the Patriots will hope to find a high-impact player in a deep tight end class.

- The Patriots foresaw offensive tackle Trent Brown's departure in this year's free agency so selected Isaiah Wynn in the first round of last year's draft. What they didn't foresee was Wynn sitting out his rookie year with an ankle injury. With that history and LaAdrian Waddle's departure to the Bills, the Patriots need to consider adding some depth on the offensive line. The unit gave up the third-fewest sacks (21.0) last year.

- Presuming wide receiver Josh Gordon won't be with the team, the Patriots are relying on a group of wide receivers with expiring contracts. With an aging Julian Edelman as the only bona fide starter, the position needs to be addressed. That said, it's the Patriots; don't be shocked if the team sticks with Maurice Harris and gets him over 1,000 yards...
