Raiders forgetting defense this off-season

Prior to this month's draft, 1SBD's Mark Hogan takes an in-depth look into each team's current projected starters and identifies strengths and lingering team needs after the first waves of free agency.

Key Takeaways

PROS

- Overhauling the wide receiver corp gives Oakland so much more flexibility in the first two days of the draft. Opponents will have to put their best corner on Antonio Brown, leave a player deep to cover speedster JJ Nelson and ensure they can still protect against against Tyrell Williams. As opposing pass rushes get tired deeper in games, this new wide receiver trio will make big time plays.

- Running back Isaiah Crowell's numbers compare relatively well to Chargers' Melvin Gordon despite being on his third team in three years. After going undrafted a year before Gordon entered the league, Crowell averages just 0.1 yards-per-touch less on 82 fewer touches. While Raiders fans may want to see Marshawn Lynch return, Oakland may have already found its guy.

CONS

- The team needs to focus on the defense in the draft after splashing on big name offensive players in free agency. General manager - and former NFL Media draft guru - Mike Mayock has a big decision to make with the fourth overall pick -- will he try to land Kyler Murray or go for a top tier pass rusher? He might hope the Cardinals make the decision for him and create a way for Quinnen Williams to fall to four.

- Despite being mentioned across the NFL landscape thought out 2018, Oakland did little to remedy its pass rush. Vontaze Burfict seems like a quick fix solution, but the team needs to add an a high impact player in the draft (if not with the fourth pick, certainly in the 20s.) The draft has plenty of pass rushers stretching into to mid rounds, but hitting on one is easier said than done.

- An upgraded offensive line might allow more flexibility at the tight end position which may be targeted more often. If that's the case, the team might want an upgrade on Lee Smith who averages 0.5 catches per game played.
