It seems the years are finally catching up with Aaron Rodgers.
The Green Bay quarterback took to Instagram earlier today (March 21) to say farewell to long-time teammate Randall Cobb --after the receiver signed with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday. Channeling the popular Tim Robbins movie The Shawshank Redemption, Rodgers said goodbye to Cobb after eight years playing together.
"I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged," wrote Rodgers: "And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend."
There was a clear chemistry displayed on the field between the two Green Bay stalwarts, so the sign of respect isn't a huge surprise. Neither was Cobb's departure from the Packers however, after his receiving numbers dropped to their lowest since his rookie campaign.
A second round pick in 2011, Cobb ranks sixth in franchise history with 470 receptions, and 11th in both receiving yards (5,524) and receiving touchdowns (41), per Packers.com. His 47 post-season receptions are fourth in Packers history -- behind former teammates Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings and Donald Driver.
The move demonstrates a continuing changing of the guard in Green Bay, whose win-loss and home-field record has taken a slide in the last number of years.
Over the past 14 months, the team has moved on from franchise cornerstones Cobb (8 years on team), linebacker Clay Mathews (10), wide receiver Jordy Nelson (9), head coach Mike McCarthy (13) and defensive coordinator Dom Capers (9). Rodgers (15), kicker Mason Crosby (12), and offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (8) are the only current players that would make that list.
General manager Brian Gutekunst will hope letting go of all that Green Bay history is a step back to the Super Bowl.
