49ers running back talent making up for lack of wide receiver versatility

TAKEAWAYS

PROS

- The 49ers have a stacked running back room lead by the recently-acquired Tevin Coleman. Coleman jumps ahead of Matt Breida on the depth chart despite Breida's break-out year last season. Both guys hit 1,000 yards in 2018 and pair up with a now-healthy Jerick McKinnon -- who gained 991 yards in 2017. All three guys have spent time as a quality starter in the league despite being just 24, 26 and 27-years-old. It should make for a ferocious ground game.

- San Francisco's front four on defense looks phenomenal. The team spent three of its last four first round picks on the position and was able to add Dee Ford to the mix this off-season. If the team can figure out how to best utilise Arik Armstead and Solomon Thomas it should see a drastic improvement in total sacks from last year -- when it ranked joint 8th-last in sacks. Former third-overall pick Thomas finally showed some consistency after being bumped inside last year so could stay at the position in 2019.

CONS

- San Francisco landed its franchise quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo but surrounded him with sub-par receiving options. The team stresses the run game so may no longer need a Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens or Anquan Boldin but the wide receivers are purely speed guys right now. The 49ers could do with adding a big-bodied guy for short to intermediate routes that can win one-on-one against the best defenders.

- NFL team's averaged 13 interceptions each last season. San Francisco managed just two -- the fewest in league history. It's an incredible number in a record-setting era for passing yards. The team ranked a respectable 11th in passing yards allowed but the lack of turnovers killed the team's chances of winning. The team must find a game-changing piece for its defensive backs.
