Redskins must decide on QB or WR in first round of draft

TAKEAWAYS

PROS

- Claiming linebacker Reuben Foster off waivers in November has turned out to be a steal. Few fans condoned Washington for claiming the former first round pick then, but the team has a rare talent at linebacker now that Foster has been reinstated following a domestic violence dispute. That's not to say more off-the-field drama isn't to come, but at least it fills one hole for now.

- It's hard to call Washington's starter at running back, but the team may just opt for Adrian Peterson to avoid any public outbursts. Regardless of who takes the first snap, Washington looks set to use a committee approach -- and a very talented one at that.

CONS

- With no wide receiver talent on the open market and few teams likely to trade away one of their starters, expect the Redskins to address the position very early in the draft. The team is very thin at the position. The best possible scenario might be a trade back in the first round so the team doesn't need to over reach for a guy.

- No one will envy Washington's quarterback situation. The Redskins believed they had their quarterback of the future locked up until Alex Smith's gruesome leg injury in Week 11, and now speculation suggests the Redskins could try draft a guy in the first round. The front office couldn't have anticipated spending such a high pick on the position so soon, especially when they need to invest it elsewhere. Since Smith's 2020 contract is already guaranteed and it's such a weak quarterback class, the Redskins w=might just have to move forward with Case Keenum.

- Signing safety Landon Collins in free agency provided some excitement but the record-setting deal wouldn't have been necessary if the team had stuck with DJ Swearinger (released in December for being too vocal) or resigned Ha Ha Clinton Dix (who left in free agency despite costing the Redskins a fourth round pick last October). There's depth issues behind Collins that could have been avoided.
