Chargers' focus on wrong side of the ball in Draft

At a glance: Los Angeles doesn't get the widespread love it deserves after 2018's campaign. Maybe it's because the neighboring Rams have a flashier roster and cooler head coach. Or that the divisional rival Chiefs have the young offensive nucleus lead by the reigning MVP. But there's no reason the Chargers won't again put it up to those two sides in 2019, and maybe even come away with the best win record.

Three of Los Angeles' defensive linemen went to other teams in the off-season but luckily Brandon Mebane returned. With Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram still there, perhaps drafting tackle Jerry Tillery was a bit of a surprise considering the team could have addressed the offensive line instead of a guy who might start in Week 1. Of course pass rushers are always valuable, but the team could have been prudent and taken someone like Juwaan Taylor to protect aging quarterback Phillip Rivers. Safety Nasir Adderley's selection also raised eyebrows considering the Chargers have three 2018 All-Pro defensive backs its secondary.

Los Angeles' offense isn't at its strongest following the departure of Tyrell Williams in free agency. But the trio of Mike Williams, Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin is certainly better than most units, especially with tight end Hunter Henry taking opposing defenses' focus. But injuries have been a factor in each wideouts' career and could cause problems for the short-on-depth Chargers. The Chargers could certainly have been more tentative and focused more on offense before adding to its Top 10 defense.

But so are the luxuries of having a strong roster.
