Colts want much stronger run game in 2019

The Indianapolis Colts reached last season's AFC Divisional round with a stout defense, a fierce offensive line and a quarterback that could get to work behind it.

But in 2019, Colts head coach Frank Reich wants to see a better running game develop behind the line.

“Our goal will be to be a top five, top seven, rushing team,” Reich told reporters at this week's Owners Meetings: "In this day of high scoring [and] crazy pass offenses, if you look at the numbers, you gotta be good at running the football... [the percentages say] if you’re a top ten rushing team, you gotta much better [chance to win].”

The Colts rushing attack wasn't bad last year, ranking 20th in the league. With all its key pieces returning - including the entire starting offensive line and running backs room - Reich hopes to make a more well-balanced offense. Indianapolis finished second in pass attempts per game (40.25) last year, per ESPN. They were 17th in rush attempts (25.5).

Having failed to bring in any additional running back weapons, Reich's hopes of an improved rushing offense will hinge on starting back Marlon Mack. Reich noted he'll utilise a committee approach, "but Marlon's a little bit more the featured guy".

"[Mack]'s got burst and he's got that speed," said Reich: "He's a good inside runner. He's got good play strength -- that's one of the phrases we talk about; what's his play strength like? He's got good burst, he's got good vision."

The 23-year-old Mack began last season nursing a hamstring injury that kept him from playing four of the first five games. He ultimately rushed for 908 yards (4.7 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns despite the missed time.

If he can stay healthy, the newly available touches might help Mack reach the 1,500 yard season owner Jim Irsay predicted for him a year ago.
