At a glance: There's been plenty made of Miami's trade for quarterback Josh Rosen but plain and simple the team got a steal. It may prove fruitless considering the lack of playmakers on offense but it is a saving grace for one of the NFL's worst rosters. Miami may slightly improve its sack statistics in 2019 by nothing suggests it will be by much.
Whether quarterback Josh Rosen starts in Week 1 is intriguing on a number of levels. 1) All the guys Rosen was drafted alongside will be entrenched starters. Could the most "pro ready" of them all be watching from the sidelines? 2) Once Rosen starts, you can't bench and then go back to him. Both for team confidence and his. When he starts, he'll be playing for his career. 3) Quarterback Ryan FitzMagic does his best work when competing for the starting job. He could make things very exciting in Miami, and pull off a win or two if it means keeping Rosen at bay.
Ultimately, the quarterback competition is good to have in Miami's uncompetitive 2019 environment. Unfortunately for both signal callers, Miami doesn't have a lot of surrounding talent to help them out. The Dolphins' offense gained the second-fewest yards and seventh-fewest points in 2018 and didn't have any substantial additions for it this off-season. That could mean everything is done in vain if the team stinks and has Tua Tagovailoa a year from now.
2017 first round pick Chris Harris needs to step up alongside first round pick Christian Wilkins if the Dolphins are to rank better than 31st in sacks this year. The defensive backs are a stronger unit however, boasting 2018 second team All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard and last year's 11th overall pick Minkah Fitzpatrick at safety. It seems they'll have to make up for some of Miami's deficiencies on the field.
